3 Ways to Save Money on Your Dental Hygiene

Oral Surgery Banner Leawood, KS | S & G Family Dentistry, P.A.

Don’t you just love how people sit back and tell you what you need to do to live a healthier, more natural life, but then when it comes to doing what they’ve said, it ends up costing you way more than simply doing what you were doing before? Well, we want you live a healthy life. We want you to be able to live a more natural life. The difference is that we do not think you have to break the bank in the process. Going green can be expensive, but in regard to your dental health, we have a few tips to help you get there and save money in the process.

Save Money in Your Home Dental Hygiene Routine

These three easy-to-make, cost-effective recipes will help you go green as far as your preventive dental care is concerned. You will also save as much as 70 percent over the standard over-the-counter solutions.

Homemade Toothpaste – The most common dental hygiene item people use is toothpaste.  Here is a simple and cost-effective recipe for your own homemade toothpaste.

  • First, get a small jar. Add ⅔ cup baking soda, 1 tsp. fine sea salt, 2 tsp. peppermint extract (this is for flavor, so feel free to substitute your favorite in place of the peppermint if you wish), and finally some filtered water. Start adding the water slowly and mixing at the same time. Stop when you get the paste consistency where you want it. Use this toothpaste the same as you use your normal toothpaste. It doesn’t spoil, but you do want to keep it out of the sunlight (that way the flavoring doesn’t start to break down). This recipe will yield roughly 6 oz. of toothpaste for about $1.50. When compared to a normal tube of toothpaste at $3.00, you save about 50 percent. Remember, use this as a supplement, not a substitute, for your regular, fluoride toothpaste.

All-Natural Mouthwash – While mouthwash is a big part of a preventive care routine for your oral health, the burning sensation that accompanies the mouthwash is not. Many oral rinses contain alcohol that, while great for reducing the likelihood of gingivitis, also can leave your mouth feeling scorched and even dry. Here is a recipe for a natural, less expensive alternative that will leave your mouth feeling clean and your breath smelling great.

  • Using a mason jar, add ½ cup of filtered water, 2 tsp. of baking soda, and 2 drops each of tea tree and peppermint essential oils. This will give you the starting amount of mouthwash. Shake the jar before uses, as the baking soda may settle in between. To use, just swish a small amount in your mouth for a minute or two. Once you figure out how long this amount lasts, you can adjust the recipe to yield a one- to two-week supply. You don’t want any longer than that because the oils will blend over the course of time and change the flavor. With this recipe, you are looking at a cost of about 3 cents per ounce. When compared to about 10 cents per ounce for mouthwash in stores, you get a savings of as much as 70 percent. Again, check with Dr. Schopper before stopping use or supplementing your regular mouthwash, especially if it was prescribed by S&G Family Dentistry.

Nature’s Dental Whitening Solution – Store-bought dental whitening takes a week or so to take effect and may cause sensitivity issues with your teeth and gums. Going green with your dental whitening may not only eliminate this sensitivity but will also save you some money in the process.

  • Get a small, clean container to mix the solution in. Take two or three strawberries (which contain malic acid, a natural enamel whitener) and mash them. Next, add some baking soda and mix in until you have a nice paste. Spread the paste on your teeth and leave for about five minutes. After that, rinse the paste off and brush your teeth. This will get the small seeds out from between your teeth. You will start to see results from this dental whitening in a week or two. The savings from this alternative are great. Store-bought dental whitening can cost as much as $50. This whitening solution will be less than $5 total ($3.00 for a pound of strawberries, and no more than a $1.50 for the baking soda), and you get multiple treatments for that price. If you want whitening that will last a lifetime, ask about our whitening for life program at only $99!
