Dental Exams and Dental Cleanings Matter
Preventive care is one of the most important things you can do to help keep your oral health at a high level. It is like taking care of your vehicle with regularly scheduled maintenance. Changing your oil, rotating your tires, and making sure you have enough coolant in your radiator will allow your vehicle to run well and prevent big problems. Dental exams and dental cleanings will keep your smile doing its job and keep problems at bay, too. You’ll get your teeth and gums looked at to make sure there are no developing issues, and you’ll get all the areas you physically can’t reach clean and free from disease-causing plaque and tartar. Doing this on a regular basis will give us a chance to monitor any potential problems and catch them quickly before they become a real threat to your teeth.
Dental Exams and Cleanings Process
Routine checkups are a two-step process. If you are a new patient, you will need to fill out your new patient forms before you start.
- Step #1 – First, you will meet with your hygienist, who will take digital X-rays of your teeth to give us an idea of your current dental situation. Your hygienist may also take intraoral pictures to help you see anything lurking inside your mouth. From there, you will have your teeth thoroughly examined and cleaned. Any area of concern will be noted for your dentist to go over during the next phase of your treatment.
- Step #2 – Dr. Schopper (or another one of our dentists) will come in next and evaluate your teeth. She will go over the areas that your hygienist made note of and examine the rest of your mouth as well. She will also perform an oral cancer screening, a TMJ wellness check, a gum health check, and an airway evaluation. All of these are wellness checks and should not be considered a sign that anything is wrong. We do this with all of our patients to make sure they are safe from any type of disease or disorder. Catching these problems early on can save a lot of difficulty later, and in the case of oral cancer, will increase the likelihood that you can be treated successfully.
How Often Should You Get Dental Exams and Cleanings?
The general rule is that you should have your teeth and oral health evaluated every six months, but it really depends on what condition your teeth are in at the time. Some people may need to come more often to have treatment that will get their smile back to a healthy state. Your dentist will let you know when you need to come back for your next appointment after they get a chance to evaluate your current condition.
